Theresa HitchensKeeping the Heavens Weapon-Free
Director, Center for Defense Information
Theresa Hitchens believes that outer space should be a shared sanctuary for exploration, communication and other peaceful pursuits, not a futuristic theater of war where enemies compete for dominance. Yet without the kind of creative analysis and decisive action Theresa advocates, the cosmos could one day become a new frontier for international conflict. As director of the Center for Defense Information, Theresa offers hope along with warning: “This is an area where I believe we actually have a chance to prevent a dangerous arms race and a type of warfare that could harm all of humanity,” she says.
That may be why Theresa’s 12-year-old son Nicholas tells his friends that his mom’s job is to save the world. What matters most to Theresa is that Nicholas becomes an adult in a world spared the devastation of misdirected military power. To do so, she holds to the conviction that multinational cooperation, including cooperative initiatives to protect space, is the key to global peace and security.
